Making artificial flowers is an old and fascinating handcraft. Our great grandmothers made them from scraps of silk and other materials. But it took the development of crepe paper to turn flower making into the art it is today. Now paper flowers are so real looking that we stop to smell them.
Once you've had the thrill of turning bits of paper into pretty flowers, you'll find it intriguing as a hobby. There's a touch of magic in seeing paper blossom into flowers under your own fingers. Arranging flowers will be more interesting, too, because artificial flowers are easily arranged in various ways. It is fun to copy the arrangements shown in magazines and books, and to express your own personality by creating your own arrangements. If materials are kept on hand, it is easy to whip up the kind of flowers you want – when you want them – at a low cost. Whether it's jonquils for the breakfast nook or colorful zinnias for a dull spot in the living room, you'll find them easy to make. Whenever a lot of flowers are needed for a community affair or the high school prom, for example, you can volunteer to supply the decorations by making paper flowers. If you want to make some pin money, flower making is a pleasant and easy way to do it. Flower making is also wonderful as an occupational therapeutic. Because it is light, simple and cheering, it is an ideal occupation for many invalids and other shut-ins, for use in settlement houses, hospitals and other institutions. What You Need to Make Flowers You can get started on this hobby with only a small amount of money. Two or three folds of crepe paper, a few wires and a little paste will send you on your way. Some flowers require several different colors of paper and several different weights of wire. Buying materials for one or two such flowers would be, naturally, rather expensive. But once you have purchased supplies, you'll have enough to make many flowers and many kinds of flowers. Always keep scraps, no matter how little, of crepe paper for sometimes a flower only requires a few inches of one color. Keeping all your materials in a kit is a convenience and an inspiration. A 20-inch box, such as crepe paper comes in, makes an ideal kit. These are the supplies and equipment for a well rounded kit. Most of them can be purchased at any chain, stationery, or department store. Flower wires can be bought at those stores that stock materials for flower making. Crepe Paper. There are two kinds, single and double. The latter called Duplex, is a convenience in making many flowers, especially those with petals, upper and lower sides, of different colors. However, it's not a necessity as you can always paste two layers of single crepe together to get two tones or a heavier weight. Stamens and Leaves. For some flowers, commercially made leaves and stamens are more effective than those made of crepe paper. These can be bought at stores carrying supplies for flower making. When they are desirable for a particular flower, "materials required" in this book suggest them. Scissors. Two pairs are perfect – one pair of heavy sharp shears for cutting through many layers of paper, another lighter weight pair for cutting the petals, etc. Paste. Ordinary library paste with a stiff stubby brush is best. Glue, mucilage, rubber cement are not suitable. Paper for Making Patterns. Light weight cardboard, heavy wrapping paper or note paper is necessary for this operation. The folder in which crepe paper is packed is perfect. Tissue or Tracing Paper. Only a small amount is needed to trace patterns. Pins . . . Pencil . . . Ruler Wire Cutters or Pliers. This tool is useful, though not necessary except in those cases where an extra heavy stem wire, a No. 7 or No. 15, is required. Wires. The chart which appears on page 241 should be helpful for reference. Directions for making the flowers given in this book specify types of wires needed. |
